Privacy Policy

Tolk ("the app") is provided by Digital1 AS, org. no. 828654322, Saksvikkorsen 2, 7562 Saksvik, Norway ("we", "us", "our"). We are the data controller for the personal data described here. This policy explains what we collect, why, how it is shared, and your rights.

1. What we collect and why
Account information
When you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive a unique account identifier and, if you choose to share it, your email address and name. If you use Apple's Hide My Email / Private Relay, we only ever see the relay address, never your real one. We use this to maintain your account, your minute balance, and your purchases across devices. We never receive your Apple or Google password.
Voice and translation
To translate a conversation, your microphone audio is streamed in real time to a third-party AI voice and translation provider, which converts speech to text and produces the spoken translation. We do not store your raw audio. This provider does not use the data we send it to train its models, and retains that data only briefly — up to 30 days — solely to monitor for abuse and misuse, after which it is deleted, unless retention is legally required.
Transcripts
If "Save conversations" is enabled in Settings, the text transcript of a conversation (what was said and its translation) is stored in your account so you can revisit it in History. If the setting is off, the transcript is discarded when the conversation ends. You can delete any saved conversation at any time.
Purchases and usage
Purchases of minutes are processed by Apple, Google, and RevenueCat; we receive a record of the transaction and the minutes credited. We store your remaining balance, number of completed sessions, and session timestamps to operate and bill the service.
Feedback
If you send feedback, we store the message and any email address or image you choose to include, so we can respond and improve the app.
2. Service providers (sub-processors)
We share data only with providers that operate the service on our behalf:
- A third-party AI voice provider — real-time speech-to-text and translation
- A cloud hosting provider — hosting, authentication, database, and file storage
- A purchase-management provider — processing and validating purchases
- Apple and Google — sign-in and payments
Each processes data under their own terms and only as needed to provide the service to you.
3. International data transfers
Some of our providers (including our AI voice provider and our hosting provider) process data on servers located outside the European Economic Area, such as in the United States. Where data is transferred outside the EEA, it is protected by appropriate safeguards, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
4. Legal bases for processing (GDPR)
We process your data to perform our contract with you (providing the translation service, your account, and purchases), to pursue our legitimate interests (keeping the service secure and preventing abuse), and, where required, with your consent (for example, microphone access, which you can withdraw at any time in your device settings).
5. How we use data — and how we don't
We use your data only to operate, secure, and improve Tolk. We do not show advertising, we do not use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs, and we do not track you across other apps or websites or sell your data to data brokers.
6. Data retention
We keep account and balance data while your account exists. Saved transcripts are kept until you delete them or delete your account.
To prevent repeat claims of the free-minutes promotion, we keep a salted, one-way hash of your Apple/Google account identifier. This hash contains no readable personal information and cannot be reversed to identify you. It is intentionally retained even after you delete your account, solely so the same identity cannot claim the free promotion again.
Aside from that hash, deleting your account removes your personal data from our systems, subject to limited legal retention obligations (for example, tax and transaction records).
7. Security
Data is encrypted in transit using industry-standard TLS/HTTPS (including the real-time audio connection). Access to stored data is restricted to what is needed to operate the service.
8. Your rights (GDPR/EEA)
You may access, correct, export, restrict, or delete your personal data, and object to certain processing. You can delete your account and all associated data from Settings → Delete account, or by contacting tobias@digital1.no. You may also lodge a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet).
9. Children
Tolk is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their data.
10. Changes
We may update this policy and will revise the date above. Material changes will be highlighted in the app.
